Hi guys - I'm mixing dn some wav files to MP3 to upload to the web. They have some dynamic range so I added a mixdown compression preset. Is this redundant if I'm converting to MP3? ie does MP3 itself add compression? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

Lossy data compression (such as the algorithms used in MP3s and MD) are a COMPLETELY different animal than audio compression, so you're comparing apples to oranges.

Yeah sound compression doesnt make the file smaller, but squashes the height of the wave to produce a more level signal ao you could boost the overall level for example.
MP3 compression is kinda like winzip in the way that it turns a large file into a smaller file via file compression. But be wary of bad MP3 compression. You can go from as low as like 92k (telephone quality) to 320k (CD quality or meant to be). And you get different qualities of these also. So choose the highest quality if possible for MP3 conversion.

It was already mentioned....

Compression on MP3 is data compression. "A lossy format". If anything, it'll take away from your sound quality and overall dynamic range.

MP3 coding generally shaves off high end frequencies to make the file smaller. The smaller you go in file size, the more you will reduce the overall dynamic range.

So over compressing your analog signal before converting to MP3 won't do anything for you.
