I've been having incredible amounts of problems with my Cubase VST/32 and Layla24 setup. It just seems that the entire system is unbelievably unstable. For a while, it'll work without a single problem, but when it does start acting up, it's at least 3-4 forced system reboots within one session. It seems when I close out of Cubase it causes the most freezes, followed by the blue screen of death. I'm not sure why...I've been thinking of upgrading my system to 2000, and there are drivers for Layla supported up to XP, however, I'm not sure how this works with Cubase...should I stay with 98 or is it safe to move up to 2000 or higher? I am not sure exactly which platforms VST32 is supported on. Is this a recommended move, is there anything I need to know from anyone's past experiences?

Well I can say from experience that VST32 definately works on XP because that is all I have worked with vst32 and SX in. Since I haven't used them in 98 I can't make a comparison but I can say this:

As a long time 95/98 users, I really like the interface but let's be honest...the OS it fairly temperamental and unstable. I used to get the blue screen of death all the time. But with XP, I immediately went to www.musicxp.net and performed their suggested tweeks, finally realised I needed to disable my cr*pblaster card and I have had about 4 months of error free, no crashie crashie wonderful music making. All I can say is XP rocks(and so does SX)!

If my cousin reads this, maybe he can add his two cents worth because he recently jumped up to XP from 98, running VST and SX.

Master K,

thanx for the reply...is there anything in particular I would need to do this upgrade? I have all the components, there are drivers for the soundcard on the Echo website...and I have XP running on my other machines. As far as Cubase, is there specific software, drivers, etc. that I'll need, or is it just a matter of installing XP, installing the sound card drivers, and then loading VST32 back up again?

I'm just REAL hesitant at the moment to do anything, I have about half a years worth of work saved on my machine and I don't want to destroy anything and set myself back, but the blue death screens are killing me. I just want to make sure I'm making the right move with this...thanx again...

Hey, hey, hey,

Just back back from out of town....there really isn't anything you need to do other than install the OS. The general concensus is that it is MUCH MUCH better to load XP in a clean install, and not to upgrade it from win98. Appearently an upgrade install from 98 can leave ghosts in the machine so to speak.

The only other thing is to run right over to www.musicxp.net and look at those tweeks. I didn't do all of them, but I did most of them and it really helps for a smooth running machine. Having the XP drivers for your equiptment downloaded in advance is nice so you can get right to work installing without having to hassle with downloads.

Lastly, enjoy your new crash-free DAW! ;)
