i just had a very sad experience. My long suffering 4-track, which has had soda spilled on it and endured subsequent ant invasion and then ant slaughter via Raid, has apparently called it quits. Here's the thing: I plug it in. I turn it on. It starts smoking and the air fills w/ the scent of ozone and bad electricity. Obviously I haven't let it go any farther, because other than that it's still working, the only other outward sign of distress is that the LCD display has darkened, presumably from the heat inside the unit. Obviously there's something very wrong, but since it hasn't completely gone kaput yet, does anyone think there's anything I can do to save it?

Dearlly beloved, we are gathered hear today to morn the the death of anazgnos 4-track.

Soda, ants, raid, smoking,............Im afraid you have lost her.

Yo Anazie:

Best break out a bottle of bubbly and salute your 4 track, dig a hole somewhere overlooking a junkpile, place 4 track in.

Rush out quickly and buy an 8 tracker or 16 tracker.

Oh, yes: NO MORE DRINKING IN THE STUDIO.

It's the "Pepsi Syndrome"!!!

THE BAD NEWS: Anytime you have soda, ants and Raid in your Portastudio, you're likely to have problems. If there's smoke, you've got major problems.

THE GOOD NEWS: Tascam superseded the 424mkII with the new 424mkIII, which is a great unit, and can still be bought new, at a reasonable price.

anazgnos,
She's gone for sure. I had a Yamaha p.a. head a few years back that had a glass of wine dumped right through it's grill. In the minute or so before it went it made these incredible sounds that were like a humpback whale, and everyone thought it was quite touching and beautiful. Too bad you couldn't have had that experience.
