Okay,

My question is, Is there any real advantage (or disadvantage) of using a FireWire (or Audiowire.. which is pretty much firewire i think anyways) interface as with the MOTU 896 or 1224 compared with your typical sound card and breakout unit such as a Delta1010 or a Digi001?
 
The main advantage is that you can use it with a laptop :D

The second advantage is if you are moving from computer to computer you don't have to open it up to install the interface if it already has a firewire port. This is also good because you don't have to open the computer up at all if your already have a firewire interface.

Another advantage is that you can get firewire cards with a few ports so you can have more than 8 inputs/outputs per pci slot used.
 
also, it's a good thing for the analog-to-digital conversion to take place outside of the noisy and busy computer, etc. yada yada yada . . .
 
I guess I was really trying to figure out if the actual medium of transfer ( FireWire vrs whatever propriotary bus a soundcard/breakout uses.) is better or worst then another. Would I expereince more problems with firewire or whatnot.

Or maybe, does having a included soundcard interface work better.

Breakout box setups usually have their IO in the breakout. MOTU, naturally has em outside. I'm not to concerned with portablity either.

how are MOTU AD/DA Convertors anyways? Anyone know chipset it uses?
 
Maybe even better, is there a list anywhere out there that specifies what hardware uses what ADDA chipsets...? hmm.. doubt it... but its worth an ask...
