MOTU drivers not installing (Windows 7 64 bit)

I recently gave my G5 computer to my brother, as I built a new one.

I'm trying to get my MOTU 896 (original) to install on Win 7, but when I go through SetupAudio.exe, it says everything installed. Only problem is, my computer isn't recognizing a MOTU device is plugged in. When I look in Device Manager, there aren't even any MOTU drivers installed except on MOTU Audio MIDI extension, but I'm pretty sure that's not the one I want.

This was simpler in Windows XP and extremely simple with the MAC.

What steps can I take?

First try uninstalling SetupAudio.exe and then re install from scratch. This should disassociate the registry entries that are causing it not to see the hardware.

I've already tried doing that. It seems like the computer itself isn't installing the drivers at all. Shouldn't some form of MOTU audio driver show up in Device Manager?

Seems it is that "hardware and software builders are screwing us again time" again!
There is a guy over at Sound on Sound forum who cannot get his copy of Samplitude activated on W8.1. there is no update path so he would have to fork out for the full Pro X. He reckons he is going Reaper!

We audio peeps do seem like a row of ducks that come around every few years to get holes shot in our bank accounts.

OP, I suggest you post on SoS. Pete from Scan is there and is a fountain of PC knowledge.

Dave.

This is the reason I haven't upgraded in so long. My system works pretty good now but it's ancient in computer years. A wise man told me long ago "If you have a hard on and want to keep it, don't fuck with it".

Windows does not play well with 1394 interfaces. Make sure when you uninstall that you completely disconnect your MOTU before starting the install. The software and the drivers have to be in place before the system sees the 1394 device. Same with my M-Audio Firewire Solo. Even when mine is installed correctly, it only shows up as Generic Audio Device on 1394. But the software all plays nice (except Shockwave) once it's there. Every once in a while shockwave knocks my audio completely out and I have to use the Device Enabler software that came with the unit. Run the software, unplug the unit, hit the enable button, plug the unit back in...Hasn't ever lost me during recording or just listening to MusicBee, though.

You're doing something wrong.. I run MOTU firewire stuff on Windows 7 64 and it's smooth as silk. Make sure you installed the right driver pack from the site, uninstall, reinstall etc. IIRC I also had to switch to Legacy 1394 drivers in Windows...read this:

MOTU.com - Using the Legacy FireWire Driver in Windows 7

Let me know if you still can't get it working, we'll figure it out.

I tried everything suggested here, I think--even the legacy 1394 switch. Which drivers do YOU use, fleet? There are like 5 Win 7 drivers that say they support legacy products.

I've tried everything involving the connection to the device in terms of installing and uninstalling: tried with MOTU plugged in and out, etc.

The PM that Fleet sent me contained the driver that works! I'm happy I don't have to buy a new interface. I love this community. :)

fat_fleet, I'm having the exact same problem as CrowsofFritz and I've tried everything that all of the message boards have suggested. Could you send me that driver you sent him as well? I can't seem to find one that works anywhere. Cheers!

Check yo PMs!

Here I am- in same situation. Trying install Motu (latest driver) for my PCie 424 card and 8Pre interface with no luck. The computer does not find the driver (but see the hardware with a question mark) after the installation. In search in folders only the Midi files have been install- not the hardware driver.

Something does seem goofy with the motu drivers. I never got firewire to work, and even the USB loses sync periodically. I'm probably fringe to downsize to a two channel interface soon, which won't be a motu.

Which is sad, since I've been using motu products for 15 years or so...
