MOTU 896HD or Pre8?

I currently have a MOTU 896HD that I've been using since 2003 with no problems at all. I'm on a Mac Pro running Logic.

A friend of mine is selling a MOTU 8Pre and would give me a good deal on it if I want it. I can't afford to spend anything so I would have to sell the 896HD to pay for the 8Pre.

I don't use any of the features of the 896HD that I would lose by switching to the 8Pre, (outputs, clock sync, etc...) and I could definitely use the MIDI ports on the 8Pre, which the 896HD doesn't have.

I have heard reports that the mic preamps on the 8Pre are superior to the ones on the 896HD.

So, my question is simply should I get rid of the 896HD and "upgrade" to the 8Pre? Even though the 896HD has never given me any problems, I do worry about it's age.

Any input would be appreciated, thanks!

NO! Don't do that. I've actually heard the preamps are the same for both. I would just keep the HD because it's able to record at 192 kHz if you ever wanted to do that. I actually have the original 896 and it runs beautifully. So don't worry about the age.
