I'm new to this forum, but I've been at the pro audio stuff for a little while now. I'm running a PC dual athlon system right now with a cheap soundblaster 5.1 just for video game and other simple sounds stuff.
I'm looking for a good Interface for my computer (running logic 5), and I was thinking about the motu 896. It has all of the inputs and outputs that I require, and I like motu's other stuff (like their midi interfaces and digital performer for MAC), but I don't know how this interface will be. What're the converters like on the 896? Does any one know where I can read an Actual review on it?
I have about $1,500 to spend but I could go as much as twice that price if the product's really worth it. Sound quality and inputs (in that order, but both are necessary), are my main concerns. I NEED something that can allow me to record stuff that could pass for a pro-quality studio production. I've heard some bad stuff about the digi-001, and I'm not sure if the delta stuff is high enough quality for my liking (that's just my initial opinion). I heard that there's all this new digidesign HD stuff, which looks cool, but it might be out of my price range (especially if the digidesign PRE unit is JUST for inputs and outputs, and still requires the digidesign HD192 for the actual converters). Any other ideas? Pleas include links.
Thanks for the help.

So, nobody knows about the 896? Ok, well is there anything else out there that somebody really swears by that has really good quality converters and decent ins/outs? Please help, I would like to start recording stuff relatively soon. Thank you.

motu

I've heard that motu interfaces run more smoothly on macs, but if you want to get one, i'd start with one of the 2408 systems, not the 896. Their firewire interfaces are generally aimed towards imac or laptop users. If you're going to spend that much, i'd suggest you check out a delta 1010 (a lot of people around here love them).

Hope this helps,
Eric

P.S. - You might wanna check compatability issues with that athlon.

It's difficult to get help if your not talking about the delta products. A lot of people on this BBS have it and thus don't have much experience with other equipment. I too want to find out how to turn my recently(today) bought computer into a PRO DAW. I've ask many question on a number of subjects and haven't recieved any info other than delta. No offence(Offense can't remember) but it seems a lot are not concerned with producing pro material at home, just "pro-sumer." I hope I upset people enough to get others like you and me to get info on PRO home recording.

Just for your info I was going to purchase the sonorus studi/o pci card and I found out that it just uses outboard adat lightpipe. Now i wanted to find out if i can hook a mixer with adat capabilities to that and record; I never got an answer. I haven't investigated the motu sys. but I hear they're pretty close to pro material.

I think you'll have to go with the double the price for the quality, but what do I know, I'm still a newbie around here.

Just talking! LOL

Thanks a lot for the input on the Motu stuff such as the general use for firewire interfaces, and that you suggest the 2408, that helps a lot. The only problem that I see with the 2408 is that it doesn't have any XLR inputs (a must for mic'ing stuff IMO), and for the money you spend, it doesn't support any sample rate over 48khz.

I've noticed what you speak of about this message forum and Delta products, these guys are like the Delta nazi's around here. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I've heard that Delta's products are really good (and not JUST from this board). It's just nice to have more well rounded input from people.

I'm glad I'm not the ONLY one that is interested in absoloute pro quality equipment and production. I would assume that this would be the goal of everyone that's subscribed to a forum like this. Well, anyway, you're comments are very welcome. I found another place today that I just posted a message in. I have no idea how good this forum is, but you can check it out at w ww.recording.org . They have a whole place that's dedicated to DAW setups. I'll let you know if I get any more info.

Thanks

Delta Nazi's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHAT?!?!?!? Who the FUCK gave you the right to say something like that? Do you have any idea what the historical implication of such a statement are? Or the weight that words carries with it? if I could meet you in person I would.....

Oh wait. I'm only kidding. Idon't give a shit.

Nah, the new MOTU 896 looks sweet doesn't it. I want one so bad. Are they REALLY only for Laptops etc. or are they ok for PC DAWs?

I never said that the 896 was only for laptops, just that it is meant to be a high quality, portable interface. You can use one on a PC (Although I've never tried one out, so i wouldn't know how it would compare to operation on a mac). Oh, and by 2408, I meant any of the PCI-234 (whatever the card is called) systems, like the 2408 mkii, 1224, 1296, etc. The 1296 is obviously the best choice, with the most xlrs and clocking up to 96 khz. Of course it is the most expensive (~1600). If I have learned one thing from this board, it that is you get hat you pay for.

Eric

BTW - As to the xlr issue, with any interface I suggest you buy an external mixer - it's just more practical.
