I haven't done much computer recording. I am looking to use my friend's Motu 828 (original, not mkII) with garageband. I am not sure how to get the program or computer to recognize the interface. do I need to download
a driver? Any info would be great. Thank you.

You'll need a firewire port which I assume you have if you're using GarageBand on one of the newer Macs. You will also need a driver update. The software that comes with the original 828 is designed for OS 9.x. You can get an OSX driver at Motu.com. I'm pretty sure it's free although you will have to login/register to access the downloads page. After installing the driver and making the firewire connection, your Mac should recognize the 828 and you should be able to configure the system for recording by opening up the MOTU driver software (it should appear in your Dock when the 828 is powered). You may also have to make changes to the AudioMidi setup utility in OSX. (It's hidden in Mac HD>Applications>utilities>AudioMidi setup.) I'm guessing you may also have to setup GarageBand tracks to tell the software what inputs and outputs you are using. If you run into any serious roadblocks you can post here, although you might find help more quickly at Unicornation.com (the MOTU users group site) or OSX audio (bigbluelounge.com)
