MOTU 828 Mark II or Aardvark Q10

do one or the other sound better? transformers?

i like the features on the MOTU but sound quality is more important.

is there another competing unit?

Well, I like the q-10's they sound realy good. We have two of them and use them with cubase sx. Works great. Check out our site... www.2020audio.ca

You have to realize the MOTU and the q-10 offer quite different features, it all depends what your looking for. Pro's for the 828...
it's fire wire and hot swapable, no instaling pci cards, has more versatile conections, if you need them, the cue mix software is a little more logical than the q-10's dsp mixer.

Pro's on the q-10... really good sounding pre-amps, phantom power, inserts, asignable outputs, virtual patchbay, really good sounding di inputs for guitar or bass.

So there you go, choose which ever one has the features you need.

I think versatility is the biggest quotient there.

The A/D converters are virtually the same.

The motu also has a assignablity and phantom power plus the preamps are actually pretty good. but there is only 2.

However the q10 has good preamps more of them as well.

It really comes down to portability and expansion:)
 
cool. a lot of the features on both i don't really need. i'm using my own pre's.

do they have the same compatibility with softwares?

If your using alot of outboard pre's check out MOTU's 24 i/o
It's what I would like to get to use with outboard gear, one of these days.
 
I would be interested to hear that myself? Are there any software conflicts?

I really havent heard any but just gonna get one myself, (Just tested it this morning at my local shop):)

For me it came down to Firewire over USB. since I plan on using this on my laptop as a DAW and as a live mixer (with or without the computer) So I needed both good A/D and D/A.

And frankly your better off using out board Pre's The Q10'a are from my ear pretty good:)

If I didnt need the portablity I might have chosen the Q10 though to be honest.

I did get a chance to test a lot of gear, I could hear a definite difference in the Maudio gear compared to the Q10, but the Motu sounded the same as the digi002 and the Q10.

I use Maudio now and really have no complaints other then latency in the USB Duo (live monitoring during recording is horrible), and lack of i/o's. But it just sounded cleaner and fuller, more depth.

Very impressed with the motu:)

I'm also looking at getting a new card... Haven't tried it yet but RME users seem to be Happy Campers. Supposedly the ADDA is much better than Aardvark (which I have now). They have the option for PCI or PCMCIA for laptops. If you already have Preamps you might want to check it out.

The Delta 1010 is on about par w/ the Q10 converters... and you'll see they dismissed the 1010 pretty quick.

I have both a Motu 828mk2 and an RME 96/8 PAD (in my sampler computer) connected via lightpipe. Both are very good quality and support everything I would need software wise. (Cubase, Nuendo, Logic, GigaStudio, etc)

I don't know if you'e on Mac but you get a free Audiodesk with the Motu unit. You may not want this software but other companies will take it as a crossgrade option so its a bonus.

I haven't used a Q10 but I'll put in a good word for the Motu.
