When looking at a picture of the 828 the input gain panel has only 5 knobs for the 8 channels it can record on. Channel 1 & 2 have sperate gain knobs..but 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8 have one knob for each pair of inputs....just how does this work if you have different things pluges into the inputs 3-4,5-6,7-8, that you need individual gain settings. Seems weird, but I am probably missing somethings. I do not have one, just reading about how they work.

I might have my terms confused, but I think gain refers to pre-amps. The 828 only has 2 pre's. As for the setting levels on the channels, you push one of the buttons and it selects between the different channels. Once you are on the desired channel, you turn the knob to tuen the level up and down.

i got the motu 828..
and its so cool that on the front there are volume controlls ,
too bad they are pairs,
lately i was recording a guitar on channel 7 and bass on 8

i had the volume button set at 50%, dead center to be certain the guitar wouldn't clip, guitar volume was nice, but bass was way too low

thank god the inputs of this motu are very clean and silent,
boosting the volume afterwards isn't a problem (depends on what you record trough of course...)

the easiest way to fix this problem: make sure you controll the output volume of your isntrument well...i did something wrong with the compressor that had the bass connected to it, thats why it was so silent

There are 2 mic inputs. All of the others are line level. You adjust them from the menu on the LCD. The knobs control cursors on the menu, not just individual channels.

Yeah, those six knobs are setup, parater, alue, select, mix buss, and cursor, and they're all for adjusting settings regarding the unit's operation, and the mix of how the signal at the inputs is being sent back out various output pairs for monitoring purposes. No actual level control for the line level inputs - you'll do that on whatever you're feeding a line level signal into the 828 from.

The mic inputs, as you know, do have a gain knob, as well as a phantom power switch.

I'm pretty sure you can actually use both of those mic inputs in addition to all 8 of the analog line level inputs.;
