Im looking for a way to take my ADAT tapes and throw them onto my computer. The MOTU 2408mkII is an obvious choice. I use Vegas 2.0 on my computer (PC) and want to know if:

1- Is it capable of using the "sample accurate" ability on the 9-pin ADAT Sync on the PCI-324 card in Vegas?

2- If I can't do this, how do you get your ADAT tracks into your computer?

That's the system I use and it rocks. You can sync it with ADAT sync or ADAT opticle sync and transfer in and out all day long, no problem. I also use Vegas and also Cakewalk 9. Either works equily well. If you go with the MOTU, I can also highly recomend a Lucid GenX6 word clock generator. Do you have a BRC with your ADATs?

I don't have a BRC nor do i plan on getting one so I guess whatever you would say about that is out the window. Reading old knowledge base info on MOTU's website it never said anything about Vegas working with the ADAT sync. But that post was dated 1999. Nothing newer has been posted on the subject, but it works for you which is good news to my ears. Some guy at the sonic foundry website posted this in response to my question.

"You are going to need more than a sound card you will also need something like the MOTU Midi Timepiece AV You need to send MTC from Vegas to The MTPAV and slave the two ADATs with adat sync out from the MTPAV to sync in on adat-1 sync out to sync in on adat-2 page 51 and 58 of the MOTU MTPAV manual. Set Bank B and C for ADAT connect your fiber cable from the out of the ADATs to the Ins of the 2408 ADAT bank B and C. Check out page 26 of the MOTU-2408 manual."

That sounds a little fishy.

One last question. Do you use the Lucid clock becuase you don't believe the internal clock on ADATs is good enough? Or is this something that you are using to sync the two up. From what you said I assume that no other clocks / sync pieces are needed besides 2 ADATs hooked optically hooked into the 2408, then the ADATs sync cable hooked into the back of the PCI 324 card. Vegas open, and transfer like there is no tomorrow?

I use a GenX6 because it has a better clock than what's available on any of my digital gear but you don't NEED one. You also don't need any of that other gear if you only want to fly your ADATs in and out of the computer. Now if you want to controll the ADAT transports from the computer, you would. Also, if you wanted to take a single track from the ADATs and transfer that to the computer for editing and then put it back on the ADATs in sync with the tracks you didn't move, that would be a problem as well. But to transfer up to 24 ADAT tracks to the computer at once, no problem. Using the 2408, you'd just set the clock to ADAT optical (so the computer is slaved to the ADATs) and in Vegas assign each track to a corresponding ADAT track (ADAT track one to VEGAS track one, etc), then hit record in VEGAS and start playback on the ADATs. If you want to put your edited tracks back on the ADATs just set MOTU's clock to internal, assign VEGAS tracks to corresponding ADAT tracks (VEGAS track one to ADAT track one, etc) set the input on the ADAT to digital input arm the tracks, hit record and start playback from VEGAS.
