Hey all out there,

I recently bought and quickly sold an Alesis Multimix 16 firewire. The drivers, support, and overall quality of the unit was a nightmare. Anyway I am on the prow for a new interface for multi track recording. I was pretty dead set on a presonus firepod until one day I stumbled upon the brand MOTU. I discovered that they have some pretty amazing interfaces, at some pretty amazing prices. I did some digging and found that their one interface, the 2408 MK3 had two precursors. I ebayed them and low and behold, I found some deals. They are the Motu 2408 and 2408 MK II respectively. Each is to be used in conjunction with a pci card that is part of the core system.

My question to all out there. Does anyone have experience with either the Motu 2408 or 2408 mk II, and if so are they dependable pieces of hardware? Also are they good quality? and Lastly, what is the major difference between the two (2408 and 2408 MK II)?

Thanks much,
Louis

I have two 2408 mkII's. You should know that they only have 8 analog inputs. For me, their strong suit is the 24 channels of digital in/out of both ADAT and TDIF. I use one with an Alesis HD24 and the other with two ADATs. I love them.

If you were looking at the FIREPOD, you might also want to look at the MOTU 8Pre. It's a lot closer to the FIREPOD feature-wise.

MOTU 8pre

I would be coming direct out of a Tascam M-3500 mixing desk, so I am not overly concerned with mic preamps, but more so a quality, expandable, analogue to digital interface. This is why I was looking at the original MOTU 2408 and 2408 MKII, because they are expandable, have 8 analogue ins, and are relatively affordable. If you can think of any other affordable interfaces that have at least 8 ins and ASIO drivers, please drop some names and I would greatly appreciate it. My price range is like $399.00 and under.

I have a 2408mkII and it has been extremely reliable. I'd recommend the mkII version because it has balanced analog I/O, while the original 2408 has unbalanced analog I/O on RCA connectors.

The 2408 is a good choice because you can expand it by adding one or two eight channel analog to ADAT converters, bringing it up to 24 analog I/O.

MOTU also made a box called the 24i, which was 24 analog inputs and stereo output. So if you are looking to convert from analog to digital, but don't need the same amount of channels for digital analog, the 24i could be a way to go as well.

I just read an interview with Pete Townsend and he says he uses MOTU 192HD's in his home studio.

Motu 24 i

Does the motu 24i have ASIO drivers and capabilities for 24 tracks of simultaneous recording (using the PCI card as a core system), or does it strictly mix the 24 analog ins to a stereo mix down? I would be recording drums and would need a minimum of 8 separate track to be recorded simultaneously at any given time.

MOTU 24i

Is it the same with the original release of the 24i and PCI-324? That link is the new MOTU 24i/o with the PCI-424 card.

The 24i is 24 tracks in and stereo tracks out. So you can record 24 independent tracks to your computer, yes.

stereo out

The 24i is 24 tracks in and stereo tracks out. So you can record 24 independent tracks to your computer, yes.

I don't want an interface that has 24 in's to a stereo mixdown, I can do that with my mixing desk into my soundcard for a lot less money. What I want to know is if the original MOTU 24i has 24 analog in to 24 digital out.

Thanks much,
Louis

24 analog inputs to 24 independent digital tracks to the computer. That's what the 24i does.

It isn't mixing down going into the computer. By stereo output, we mean that it only has a stereo output, so when you play it back, you can't independently drive 24 different speakers. :D
