motu 1224 & mackie 1604 vlz pro

Hi-

I am greatful and appreciative for any input/advice/feedback.

Here is my situation....
I have a motu 1224 8 in/out, which I multitrack through a mackie 1604 vlz. 1-8 out to 1224....9-16 from 1224 back out for playback monitoring! simple......
I have a oppertunity to aquire another 1224, thus doubling my in/out to 16.
My rookie question is this..... what do I use the 1604 for now?
just for playback monitoring? i'e all 16 out from the 1224 into the mackie, and all synth/ sampler/ vocs, etc straight into the 1224 (I thought I wanted to have "preamp" which the mackie Supplies?.....
can I send all 16 channels from the mackie into the inputs on the 1224?

I would do a lot of reading at the Motu site, and send an email to Motus sales dept, they usually respond if they think a sale is possible.

I think this is more of a mixer ? than a MOTU ? .

I have a 1604 vlz too..
Lets see...you only have 8 direct out sends..... You could probably sub out and get 4 more.....maybe (and I dont know cause i've never tried it) you could use the inserts to send a signal to your board from the other 8 channels that dont have direct outs.

You will need some kind of preamp though on each chanel no matter what. Are you really tracking 16 channels at a time? Thats a lot of stuff going on. With 16 channels, I think its time to expand to the Mackie 32*8 mixer.
