Bristol Posse

Okey Dokey
So in my ongoing mission to never enter a Hallmark store for any reason no matter what the holiday and advertising pressure...
I spent 3 weeks on this instead.

Even threw in some reverse guilt tripping to "forget about bling"

any comments on the mix always welcome. I actually though ahead on this one and left myself some time to fix things before the actual holiday comes around

thanks

There are many good musical ideas in this track, and I'm impressed that someone has the courage to write a song about Mother's Day. With that title, I wasn't sure what to expect, but you've done a pretty good job . . . except "Forget about bling" is a great line and I reckon it makes a way better title.

There are a few areas that you might like to think about if you do further work on this track:

1 The bass sound is very mid-rangey and could do with a bit more definition and being seated more in the mix.

2 The kit (acknowledging that we make do with what we've got when a real drummer is not available) also sounds separated from the mix. Perhaps it could do with less reverb, and maybe you could find a kit set that is not quite as empty-sounding.

3 Using the vinyl scratchy sounds has been done before, and I'm not convinced that it adds anything particular to the song. It's a neat gimmick (which I've used), but needs to have a context to be seen as anything other than a gimmick.

4 You've put a lot into the backing, and that helps with providing dynamic interest. It would be interesting to hear what happens if you do the same with the vocals. At the moment, they're pretty much all at at a (somewhat subdued) level (even the 'hey hey hey's), and I think some variations in intensity would add further interest.

The structure and arrangment has, for me, a strong British feel. There is a touch of Ray Davies in the writing, a hint of XTC in the structure, and I can easily imagine Madness doing a version of it.

Thanks for the input
While I'm now in So Cal I actually grew up in England lisstening to Madness and XTC amongst others so that may be where that is comming From

Bass in particular always gives me problems, I'm a Bass palyer out of necessity and I never seemt to get it quite right

I'll have to fiddle around a little more

Pretty good arrangement!
Agree with Gecko about the stuff he pointed out. Drums sound very artifical and a bit dijsointed from the rest. Good pop-song though.

Cheers
Joe :):)
