Getting better
Hello again. My sad computer hardware saga continues...

Some of you may remember I was trying to decide whether to upgrade my Celeron 400 to a better Celeron or a PIII. I was told I could go up to a PIII 1000, and was all set to go when the shop calls and says the motherboard cannot take an upgrade. It's a 66 bus only. Geeze.

So, I must ask Ola, Slack and other computer recording experts: What kind of motherboard/processor combo do I need? I would like to get both for $300 or so - is that just a pipedream?

PS I am running Pro Audio 9, Delta 44 soundcard, the ubiquitous ART studio "tube" preamp, a shiny new MX-67G and various instruments.

Any specific brand/spec/pricepoint suggestions?

Youll probably have to upgrade your RAM too, unless it is newer and PC133 (assuming youll be running at 133?).....

Yeah Gidge is right on there. Fortunately, memory is cheap at the moment. I'd look at getting an ASUS CUSL2-C, PIII 1000 and 256MB of PC-133 SDRAM. Don't know if that falls within budget or not. Rough calculation puts it in the $300 to $400 range, USD.

pricegrabber.com will get you the CUSL2C for 112.00, the PIII1ghz133 for 188.00...$300 so far....256mb133 from crucial would be no more than $60.....

next up, how fast is your hard drive?.....

Man, it's getting cheap these days. I'm glad I couldn't afford a new computer half a year ago. Gidge's list looks like my shopping list. Remeber to include a cooler in the calculations. Maybe a Golden Orb or som other good and quiet fan. The only problem with the Golden Orb is that it looks so cool that you'll be running your copmuter without the hood.

i have the asus cusl2-c with a pIII 1Ghz and 512mbs RAM. it cost me $460, but i bought the first stick of RAM before the price drop at crucial.

i got a golden orb fan, which does indeed look cool...however, i installed a coolermaster.......

Thank you all, again, for the excellent suggestions.

I am going to try to save the clams for your suggested PIII/1gig/ASUS combo. It looks indeed like I can get them for $300, plus shipping. Are there any other compatibility issues I should be aware of, aside from the need for a fan and upgraded memory? I have a 20-gig hard drive, but I don't know if it's 7200 or slower. I'll check tonight (yes, surfing at work again!)

Make sure that the mobo fits in your case, if you're planning on using your present case. The CUSL2-C is an ATX sized mobo, which is about as common as it gets in PC so I doubt that it'll be any problems. Also check that the power supply is at least 250W and preferrably 300W.
