quick ??
what is the best MB for athlonXP(1800+) that doesn't have a via chip set??
right now i have a PChips 841L MB..it has a sis chipset, but i can't seem to get this 1800+ to run at regular speed.. its at 1150 which is to slow for me...

i'm trying to stay under $100 for the board... pls help me...

Nvidia chipset man...

I just built my buddy a system using the Abit NV7-133R board.

it is currently $88 on newegg.com

the Asus A7N266-C is also good I hear... it runs at $105 from newegg.com

one thing to note on these boards, at least on the ABIT, and I think the Asus too, is that the AGP slot is 4x only and requires a 4x AGP card (1.5volts) otherwise, you risk damage to the board.

very fast, very stable boards.

i'm not gonna order any more motherboards.. i'ma buy this one locally...
the board has to work with a delta 1010 too....

i don't care if the video is built-in or not, i just need a stablefast board.. that will let this 1800+ run at 1800+ bot 1150...

ASUS A7S333, SIS chipset

"i'ma buy this one locally"

Good.

i thought the 333 had a via333 chipset???

what sis chip set.. i think i have the sis740 now... this motherboard is stable, and real fast, but i can't run my chip at the regular speed...

i'll check out the asus boards...

No, it's an SIS chipset.

Ignore my rant, I got sidetracked.

ok i see, the asus a7v333 is the via chipset version...

are via chipsets any better?? or do they still suck

I've used both the 735 and 745 SIS chipset with no problems.

VIA chipsets appear to be problematic. Many chipsets can be, many factors.

If the 735 worked fine for you but your $15 PCchips motherboard didn't work right, then I suspect a $80 ASUS board would fix that.

Have you flashed the Bios on your current mobo? That may be the reason it doesn't clock high enough. Higher speeds are often supported on bios updates.

c9: does your mobo support 133 FSB? It's running at 100 FSB which is why it's not running at full speed. Maybe a jumper on the board will allow you to get full speed? mostly mobos come with 100 FSB default.

For the new board, I would heartily recommend an nVidia chipset board. The nVidia boards are the fastest around after the Via KT333 and KT266a.

Stay away from Sis and AMD chipsets. They're pretty long in the tooth, and will not give you the best perfromance.

yes its 133.. i set it to 133 and it shows up with a athlon xp 1800+ at 100fsb its running at 1150. but i can't ever start xp with it at 1800+...i get blue screens..y who knows...

stay away for sis, never heard that before...
nVidia.. didn't they just go under??? or is it another company i'm thinking of..

nVidia is alive and well. Visiontek was the latest company that went under. nVidia will not be going down for a while. They power the xBox, as well as the chips behind some of the most popular graphics cards on the planet.

Sis and Via are not the hottest chipsets in town. Both are improving. Not yet in the big league but are getting there. For an AMD there's a close performance race between Via and nVidia, with Sis a distant third and AMD some way behind. Ironic that a company which manufactures a fantastic CPU cannot design a chipset that makes the best of it.

i'm trying to flash my bios... i have ami bios on this motherboard... but can't seem to get the flash to work... can someone help me out.. its a pcchips m841 motherboard...

What is the procedure you're following?

You'll need:

1. A boot floppy
2. The flashing program
3. The latest BIOS file

Sorry, c9. you lost me there for a minute.

What is the procedure you're following?

What error messages are you getting, how is the computer responding before and after the flash/lack of flash?

As an added attempt you can check within the BIOS setup there is an option for 'Write-protect' or 'allow update' this should be set to no in the first case and yes in the second.
