Hi there,

I am setting (=remodeling) my computer - which is currently running on a VIA chipset for audio recording and do have some Qs:

;) what are good, reliable chipsets? ... not necesarily the best, fastest and biggest, just plain good.

;) what is the difference of chipsets and a motherboard (in practical terms)? ... i guess the only way of changing a chipset = changing the MB

;) I have a AMD athlon (1,6gh) - can this processor be used with any "modern" MB that I would be acquiring - same Q for my 256 of memory?

I feel that my cpu and 2 hdd (7200rpm) are still in very good shape - so the cheapest way to upgrade would be to swap the MB - right?

any thoughts
thx

If you have a functional 1.6 gig system with Win 2k pro or xp OS a better choice would be putting in a decent audio board. Onboard sound is subject to internal noise and is limited in usage. Without knowing what your mb is or what your recording goals are I can't advise you on which audio board to get.

If you would like to persue it further give a brief description of more specifics on your system OS MB etc and how extensive or type of recording you want to do and this forum will give you tons of info and advise....

In my view an intel chipset (865, 875) with an Intel cpu gives you the most stable, reliable and consistent platform for audio work. Not knocking AMD/VIA, but mixing chipsets & cpus can sometimes result in the unexpected.

On a nice solid mobo like Asus, the intel combo is hard to beat

My Athlon XP2000 with Abit NF7 mobo with Nvidia chipset works like a charm! :)

For AMD CPUs Nforce2 chipsets are performing well. Via's have some PCI latency problem, SIS's don't work with products from digidesign etc.. So the best bet would be Nforce 2 with dual channels for RAM.
