c7sus,

Jerry Garcia... I always considered him overrated, I never really "got" the Dead, can't fricken stand Bob Weir... but when pressed I have to admit, he could do it sometimes... I guess I never had the patience to listen to them for six fricken hours for those few moments of brilliance. The one that's stayed with me the most for all these years was one little moment in one of the solos in the song "China Cat Sunflower" on this live 3-lp album, Live in Europe or some-such title from maybe '73 or '74?

That brings to mind another overrated guitarist with roots from the same scene and era as the Dead -- John Cippolina. And another -- Jorma Kaukonen. I could never stand any American rock guitar players other than Steve Miller and Mike Bloomfield (and of course Jimi) from that era, until more good ones started surfacing a few years later after the influence of Cream and Hendrix started soaking through...

P.S. Loved what you said about Letterman and Schaeffer too...

For me Eric Clapton wins hands down. It's not that he isn't good or other people aren't worse but I don't think he deserves the "guitar god" status so many have assigned to him. For example, Jerry Garcia - not many really think of him as that talented. He was more respected for his godfather figure and for his sound/approach more than his technical ability. Sure Gilmour and such may be overrated as well, but for some reason Clapton always seems to be propped up on a much higher pedestal than any of the rest.

Let us just stop and think over what we mean by "overrated". In my view an overrated guitarist is one who is worldwide famous as a guitarist among the general public, but doesn't impress guitar players much with his skills.

Go out and ask people to give you names of highly rated guitarists, and they will come up with something like Clapton, Hendrix, Segovia, Santana, Hank Marvin etc. (depending on age and musical interests). But to get names like Vai, Satriani, Söllscher, Renbourn you will have to ask guitar players.

Also, what do we mean by a good guitar player? One who can make catching riffs and soloes? Well, in my view these are composer skills. Old friend Beethoven could make catching melodies (to some people) for instruments he never had played.

So a great guitar player is one who impresses by technique and interpretation. When comparing classical guitarist it comes down to this, because they all play pieces written by someone else. There is no reason a rock guitarist should be rated by other standards when we rate him "as a guitarist".

So Clapton has written some nice catchy songs (as a composer). As a guitarist his interpretation is sometimes great. But technically, I am not impressed. A lot of people could make indistinguishable copies of his guitar playing.
