More odd things that have happened to me. And, yes, I¡¯m going to crosspost this to one other topic.
I now officially have my DMP3 and Audiophile 2496 connected. But, lo and behold, a problem: one of the gains on the DMP3 is too much, and the other is too little. And the VU meter doesn¡¯t seem to be representative of the input. My thoughts are that maybe I have to somehow correllate the DMP3 and the input level of the soundcard. (2496) But I can¡¯t figure out how to do that. The Monitor Mixer program that CAME with the Audiophile doesn¡¯t seem to work. When I adjust the inputs and play through a keyboard or guitar NOTHING happens. I also wonder whether or not this has to do with the fact that Windows XP does not ¡°sign¡± the Audiophile drivers. Also, I¡¯ve already gotten hum in recording, but maybe that¡¯s due to the fact that I had to set the gain so I high so I could get any kind of ¡°warm¡± sound? Or is this the fact that I¡¯m using an ¡°unbalance¡± ¨ù¡± tip? What difference does that make? Also, weird stuff in Sonar has been happening. In the open new template, just the other day I tried to open one, and I was reduced to only three templates from the normal number of twentysomething. I had to use System Restore. Then Sonar stopped accepting my Sblive! Output drivers. System restore again. So many questions. I just want some great sound is all. Oh, also. When I use the Sblive out for MIDI, I get it through my speakers. When I use Delta for Midi, I get it through my keyboard. What¡¯s the deal? And I have read the manuals, at least for the Delta/M-Audio products which are sadly, sadly outdated.

Thanks,
Kennan

This is alot of stuff but I'll try to give you some suggestions.

First the levels should be different, your guitar will have less input then your keyboard so you will have to turn your gain more on the preamp.

The MOnitor Mixer program works for me. But the levels there are for monitoring not for recording. For recording you need to look at your levels in sonar and make sure that when you play loudest you are not in the red (clipping)

I belive there are win xp drivers for M-audio products check here

"Hum in recording" if you are using electric guitar it will hum wickedly if you are near computer monitor I just discovered that my self. (thought it was my pedals then walked away from the computer and it was quiet)

MIDI thing makes sence to me, when you play MIDI file through SBlive the sounds come off SBLIve when you play through delta and your keaboard is hooked up to it you get sounds from it. So not sure what the problem is.

Hope this was helpfull
cheers

Thanks for the help, and here's a few more questions:
If I'm to mix MIDI and audio through SONAR, how can I get the MIDI to play through my speakers using the Delta soundcard?
Also, for some reason (I've only done the SONAR tutorials), when I change the MIDI patch for the second midi track, it always stays the same as the first. If I choose Hammond organ for track one, and then Fretless bass for track two, both tracks play the Hammond.
ANd finally one more question: my DMP3 has balanced outputs, my AUdiophile 2496 has unbalanced inputs. What does this mean and should I switch up to a soundcard with balanced inputs?

Thanks,
Kennan

I'm just getting into midi and facing some of these issues.

There's no quick way to get your Delta to play your midi files. What you have to do is record the midi file (out of the Soundblaster) as an AUDIO file. Then you can have the Delta play the new audio file (you'll want to mute the midi file so you don't have two files playing the same thing....)

If you are using Sonar, you could also make your midi tracks play back through a DXi softsynth. I just did that last night for the first time... the instructions are in the Sonar book.

Hope this helps,

Fab

I can't help you with sonar I don't use it.

DMP3 has both balanced and unbalanced output.
There is a section in your DMP3 manual that talkes about balanced vs unbalanced. Read it first (it's short ;)). If something doesn't make sence I'll be happy to try and help.

cheers

I use Cakewalk Proaudio, you should be able to define your instruments on a track basis. Configure your instruments to point to your internal midi player on your computer. Almost all sound cards support this. It will probably sound like crap, but it should work.
