Okay, so I was happy with my drum results and decided to move forward with a couple guitar tracks. I recorded them into simple little part I did purely for testing purposes. Who knows, maybe I'll use it someday. I doubt it. Either way, I was trying to get sort of a Radiohead clean guitar sound and I was able to dial it in like this in about 5 minutes. I think it's pretty close. Alot of this has to do with my guitar and my amp settings but the preamp definitely sounds good to my ears. I like to test these in mixes though because I think guitar tracks sound a lot different in the mix then they do by themselves.

Have a listen.

So far, I'm still pretty F#CKING happy I got two of these units for less than 200$ They will be getting some serious use.

Oh, and headphones are always better for listening to these since none of them have been mastered in any way and might sound a little dry on monitors.

Very nice. Yeah, Radiohead really comes to mind here. What mic did you use on the amp and what kind of amp is it?

Thanks.

Stereo mic configuration with a SM57 and a Blue Kickball. Not my favorite mics but they work and they were sitting there. I usually record with a 57 and a Sennheiser e609. I need to get an MD421 but it isn't in the budget yet. The 57 is too harsh and the Kickball is too muddy but together with the preamp they produce a pretty decent tone.

I used a Fender Hot Rod Deville 2X12 on this I am going to test my 4x10 tomorrow because I like it's tone a bit more (different tubes). I also used my guitar with the growliest pickups which is a Les Paul Custom with a Classic 57 in the neck and a Burstbucker Pro on the bridge. I have a Gretsch Country Classic that I use mostly for studio recordings that I will test tomorrow as well if I have time.

I was happy with it though.

I think the guitar sound you have there is pretty good. Thanks for sharing. I don't think I've ever gotten an unusable guitar sound with an SM57, but yeah, I usually mix it with some other mic (typically some type of condenser)...

I picked up an MD421 several years ago - got an amazing price on a slightly used demo unit - and never regretted the purchase. It's very good on a lot of instruments including guitar amps and drums. Some people say it works well for voice, too, but I've never tried it.
