I'm am recording with a soundblaster audigy 24 bit recording card using a sure sm57 and a cheap mixer with preamps in it and my recordings still don'/t sound loud enough or have enough space/headroom. The more I turn it up to get volume on the mixer or the program (Sonar and Audio Studio Gen 6), the more hiss I get in addition to volume. How do I remedy this and get more space into my recordings? What am I gonna have to buy?

COMPRESSOR! usually has an expander/gate and a compressor/limiter the gate function only acknowledges frequencies above a certain point at which you set....i have mine up enough to shut out the damn highway 60 feet from my window. check www.musiciansfriend.com or www.americanmusical.com or www.zzounds.com/a--2676837 for one...they usually start around 70+ bucks....buying a reverb unit can give the appearance of headroom also

can I use the compressor/limiter/gate I have with Sonar 1.0, or rather, how would I? when I use Light voc gating, I lose the tracks sound.

i have sonar 2 and the vocals sound ok to start but i always end up taking it off...buy an external one....you have alot more control and its easier to handle than the one on the computer....works a ton better too. i wouldnt use the one on the computer
