well friends, here's more fodder for the fire.
I finally sat down and actually (tried) to finish a mix (I have more time on my hands now since I was laid off --- anyone need a software engineer???) anyway... I threw together this first-draft mix to get some feedback.

Yeah, I know about some of the noise, and the hint of my click-track :D also you'll pick out several performance flubs.

I just sat down a few days ago and recorded this moody piece "on the fly."

I like how it comes into its stereo image! I like the snare sound, too. The whole tune seems to lack a bit of low end to me. The kick and bass just don't seem to fill it out quite enough for me. Listening more closely I just want to hear more bass guitar.

Good stereo image throughout the song. I like the effects and sound of the guitar, too.

Over all it sounds a little lo-fi, but in a hi-fi kind of way. It sounds like it would have some intimate, dry vocals over the verse and broaden out to a more layered sound during the chorus.

Neat work,
Chris

I like it. Where you going with this? It's wide open for lots of fun stuff.

This is nice!

I like it. I like the overall drum sound...I don't know if i like the cymbal tone....but that's getting PICKY. I also dig the guitar tones alot...very REALISTIC! That's how I dig guitars...not overly distorted or scooped. I'd say the only thing I DON"T like is the bass sound....not defined enough? Not loud enough?

I'll say this....this is as good as a lot of stuff I like and own so it's the right path indeed. I hope you take this as a compliment....I'm sitting here kinda singing little phrases and lines....I can hear a great Paul Westerberg/late Replacements vocal in there!!

Nice! Why isn't there more stuff like this around?!

Yes, you are absolutely right about the low end... I fear the low end... and I know that is my weakness because all of my recordings would always be soooo bass heavy so I've been completely terrified of the low-end... I know I need to work it back in.

The guitars were recorded using the J-Station J-Clean and Black-face (zero distortion). with a tremelo effect on the "lead"

Heh... oh no.. not lo-fi :) Actually, yeah, i think I see what you mean by that.. it wasn't intentional as my skills are not at a point where I think I could achieve a given sound intentionaly :)

Yeah, my girlfriend is working on some vocals for this... she has a very nice Sarah Shannon (Velocity Girl) / Liz Phair kind of voice.

Thanks so much for your words of wisdom, I'll work on it (as I still have a great deal of time on my hands) :)

Track Rat,
Thanks :D

I dunno where I'm going with it, now you made me think... should I be going somewhere with it?? :)

One thing i am working on is some lyrics and having my girlfriend record some vocals (she's been bugging me to have something she can sing to).

Heylow,
Wow, jeepers, thanks :D

Heh... yeah, about the drums... did I fool anyone? Those aren't real drums :D

I have the Clavia ddrum4 kit (which is simply amazing). Yeah, those are my least favorite cymbols, but i haven't had the brain hooked up to my PC in a while to swap out sounds. Guess I should do that because I hear what you are talking about

yeah, the bass is my weakest link... I have a Washburn acoustic/electric bass... and it sounds like CRAP mic'd (I've tried a 57, an LDC, and a small capsule cond)... so I run it direct into my J-Station using the "Rock" setting... which fills it out, but the pickup in the Bass introduces so many strange and VERY low freqs that I have to roll off everything below around 100hz so that it doesn't fill my mix with mud. I know I just have to learn to tweak it more to produce a good full sound with it, because I've heard it before :)

Thanks so much for the compliment, that means a lot to me. Yeah, defintely some vocals along the lines you're talking about would fit rather nicely... but since I can't sing... and my girlfriend does... she'll have to do the job :)
