My setup is a Asus P5a Super7 w/ AMD K62 450mhz cpu and 192 mb RAM. I am running cubase vst/32 on a sblive soundcard. I am only able to use about 8 insert effects. Is this normal? Anyway, I am thinking of upgrading to a better cpu.
I currently have a socket 7 motherboard, so I would have to get a socket 7 cpu also. The fastest chip out, to my knowledge, is a 550mhz socket7. This is only 100mhz faster than my current chip. Would this make the difference I am looking for, or should I not waste the money?

More power please....

I seem to recall that the AMD K62 processors were not all that great with floating points calculations, which would be the issue here with directX or vst plugin's. It would matter little in software were you have to render the changes before hearing them. But in the case of real time monitoring of the effects/processors, CPU power is a big issue.

Not only is 450MHz a little on the light end of things, but it is an older (relatively speaking of course...:)) AMD that was not known for great performance in real time effects for audio.

Definately a faster processor will allow you to monitor more inserted effects in real time in your audio software.

I am not familiar with the AMD products so I cannot help you in deciding just how to step up to get more effects at once. Obviously your motherboard and it's bios will only support up to a certain processor. And then the issues of what type of slot the cpu uses is a whole other matter. You may or may not have a hard time finding a faster cpu that fits your motherboard. I am sure though that others on here may be helpful.

But yes, more cpu speed means more inserted effects.

Good luck.
