More Drums

I am currently using four channels for drum micing sm57 on the snare D112 for bass and two sm58's for overheads and I am wanting to upgrade to some LD condensers for overheads and vocals. The problems is, like most of us I'm on a budget. I currently can either buy 1 for a $199 or I might be able to swing 2 if I buy within the $100 - $150 range. So the question is if I use one condenser and one 58 for the overhead is that going to sound funny? What if I pan them out? I would love to be able to get some nicer condensers but my 58s are borrowed, so come next weekend I am short two mics. Kind of puts a crimp in saving up for a couple weeks and I do currently own 1 58.

Try to get either a matching pair or as close to a matching pair as possible. Why not see if you can find something used. You might be able to find 2 AKG C100;s for about $150 a piece, but if you can't get 2 decent condensors, I would just get one, use it by itself as an overhead/area mic and save up and get another one just like it. The NT3 sounds nice and is extremely economical. Go give it a listen! $150 each.

I use a pair as overheads and they sound great - you should be able to get a pair for $300

I think, generally, that you don't want to mix and match mics to use as overheads
 
I do kind I have my hart set on a large diameter condenser. Especially since I will want to use it for vocals and overheads. I think what I may do is get one of the better mics and either us it as a single overhead or concentrate it on the side I am working on more (hi hat or ride) and then use the 58 for the other side. I would think I wouldn't want to pan the condenser more then just barely off center if that but I could pan the 58 where ever I want to. Also if I use the condenser as a single overhead I could probably use the 58 on either the hi hat or ride to help bring it out a little more if I needed to on mix down. I would rather by one mic I want then two I really don't so I think I may just need to play with it. As always though I would love some more suggestions.
