So the Mopads Auralex makes...should I invest in them or is there a cheap homemade way to isolate the speakers from my desk?

I use MoPads, but there are certainly plenty of cheap home made solutions for isolating your speakers.

You could cut pieces of foam yourself.

A rubber pad, or a mouse pad under the speakers.

Cut little rubber balls in half and glue them to the bottom of your speakers.

These are just a handful, I'm sure there are plenty of people here with a lot more creative solutions than those.

After years of using these, I got rid of them. They mess with the midrange and you get varying results, this can vary by cabinet. Speakers boxes are designed to radiate sound and putting them on a sponge affects how the cabinet resonates. I use Event ASP8s which are a large cabinet with an 8 inch speaker and the foam underneath made the mid-range indistinct.

If you have a base or a pair of stands that are resonating with the speaker or in the case of your cabinets being small, then they might make sense because smaller speakers don't tend to resonate as much unless you are overdriving them. De-coupling the speakers from resonant sources is a good thing but for solid stands which are well weighted and absorb low resonance, the foam is not necessary and can even mess with the response of the speakers, my experience anyway.

Interesting there Middleman! I have ps8's and I think I witnessed the same thing to a degree.
I took the foam out from under the monitors and the missing mids came out a tad.

What are your speakers now? What size speakers? What are they sitting on?

I just bought me a pair for my event TR8's which are up on solid stands and I think it gives me a nicer bass response. Also the fact that they're now tilted a few degrees down makes it a little easier for me to mix.. I used to always find myself trying to have to sit up a bit in order to hear everything. I for one think its good bang for the buck... but what do I know anyway.. :)

There was an article in recording magazine a while ago showing how to make your own custom monitor stands.

Basically all they did was attach some pvc pipe to a base, fill it with sand and then make a platform for the monitors to rest on.
