Except that you'll have more options with effects on a stereo track and some effects/processors ONLY work on stereo files. (esp. VST plugins it seems)

Hi,

I am recording through one microphone to my hard drive. When I record having selected stereo I get two copies of the same track. Is there any use in recording stereo when I use just one mic or is it just as good to record in mono then?

Thanks

Pedro

nope...no sense , except a wav file twice as big as it would be if it were mono , and thats not a good thing..record one mic mono..

DOUBLING TRACKS AND PANNING THEM HARD LEFT AND HARD RIGHT IS NICE THING YOU GET FROM STEREO. iTS GIVES YOU A NICE SOUND.

Doubling a track does not mean taking one signal (i.e. one mic) and recording it simultaneously on two tracks. You could pan both dead center or hard right and left and they would sound identical. If you record the same thing (e.g. a rhythem guitar) twice, one on each track, and then pan them left/right, its the small differences between each track that tells your ears there's one guitar way on the left and another on the right, giving you a huge soundstage, even though they are playing the "same" thing. Or you can take one source, record it direct to one channel, and send a delayed signal (say 20-40ms) to the other, and then the delay will still create the illusion of difference which widens the soundstage.

slack ,

i was unaware of that.. good call .. although that doesnt make sense to me.. can someone explain to me why or what advatages there are of some plug ins working with only stereo stereo tracks ?

i really suck at effects.. i try to avoid them..
