Hi guys,

I am new to this site but when looking around this one seems to be the most helpful so I hope you can give me some advice.

I record on a TASCAM DP-002 recording unit and the question is regarding mono/stereo when bouncing the tracks.

For example; when I bounce say 6 tracks (with pan set on them all in location that I want) and then bounce them to 2 tracks do I keep the pan levels on the 2 tracks (which now contain 6) straight down the middle and it keeps my stereo panning that I have bounced or do I need to then pan these 2 tracks slightly left and right?

This has really confused me so I hope that you can help.

Cheers
Tony

If you're bouncing to a "stereo pair" then you need to have the tracks panned where you need them panned (and you won't be able to change it later, so it'd better be right on).

if you bounce down to two tracks ..... you need to have the final two tracks that now contain 6 tracks) panned hard right and left. Think of those final two tracks as your monitor speakers. You don't put the monitors on top of each other right in the center and you don't put them slightly left and right ...... the same with the two tracks you're bouncing down to. For them to properly give the stereo seperation you panned the 6 tracks to achieve ..... the final tracks have to be panned hard left and right.

^^^^^This right here. Pan them completely left and right. Up the middle will make it mono, and "slightly" left and right will make it almost mono and not quite stereo.
