My band has been in the studio writting the past couple of weeks and I record everthing. I'm using 3 mics on the drums, 1 kick, 1 snare and 1 LDC overhead. Everything is panned dead center and yet, to my ears there is a certain width to them that I don't understand. The drums sound almost more "Stereo" than when I use 2 overheads. What the hell is going on?

It could be the result of the OH track not being completely aligned with the kick and snare tracks. Sometimes this can give a good result, other times it can sound like poo.

It sounds good considering the lack of time I spent setting up the mics. I may try this mono overhead thing some more. I think I like it.

To pan or not to pan?

Basicly if you are more than 6 feet away from a drum set the sound will be mostly mono with the possible exception of room sounds.

I have made the mistake of panning the drums too wide and it sounds fake!
To hear a wide stereo field you would have to be sitting right in the center of the drum set?

So mono drums are much more realistic in the overall mix, if you are going for a "band on stage" type of mix.

where did you place the LDC overhead?

about 4 feet above the kit, and pretty much centered (directly above the drummers thighs or so).

but anyway you would hear the same in both speakers, no?

I frequently mic with one OH, one on the snare and one on the bass drm. I pan the OH & snare SLIGHTLY apart & it sounds very natural. Though, that is with matching mics such as Oktava MC012's on both.
