Hello Folks,
I've been a little on the unseen side of late - partially due to work & also due to my internet connection being so poor.
At the end of this link is a 192 MP3 of a current project I'm playing with.
It's 192 because of the internet issues - uploading the 6 meg file took over an hour - from that I'm certain you can extrapolate me situation.
Back to the project:
The track is called Listen Like Brian. It's in mono, recorded to tape & uploaded to computer for mixing. I've decided to do a mono project simply because I've begun mixes in mono many times but after getting the basic track settled I've begun panning etc. I've heard some great new mono recordings just lately, (Cavetone Records), & was inspired. Only bass, 2 guitars, drums & percussion at present.
In the mix I've left the bass alone & ran the fatter guit through a high pass at 400hz to allow room for the bass' bottom end.The 2 guitars trade prominence between chorus & verse.
How do things sit in the mix to your ears?

Here are the, as yet, unsung lyrics based on Wilson song titles:
Listen Like Brian.
Oh, now wouldn’t it be nice,
If you still believe in me.
I wasn’t made for these times,
I need your love & mercy.
Oh babe now, let’s wake the world,
& be here in the morning.
‘Cos this sound is meant for you,
If you listen like Brian.
Drop the needle in the groove,
As the sound begins to grow.
Live colour not black & white,
My pet sounds come in mono
With a single spinning ‘round
A sad song left me crying.
Record player in my room,
I try to listen like Brian.
Now, keep an eye on summer,
And remember rockin’ bands.
New plastic on the platter,
EP cover in my hands.
You’re busy doin’ nothin’,
Oh please don’t do it again.
Now, yours is the whole wide world
If you listen like Brian.
SOLO
Yeah babe, it’s OK if you,
Go & play that same song twice.
Let the music take you home
Babe, oh, wouldn’t it be nice?
Turn your head & close your eyes,
Let the waves break, no lying’
Feel the beauty feel the beat,
If you listen like Brian.
Record player in my room,
I try to listen like Brian.
‘Cos this sound is meant for you,
If you listen like Brian.

The two guitars are quite different (eq wise) and are nice and easy to separate. Nice chunky rhythm. The "backing" guitar works well - I think they call it the pad effect. Drums carry it along fine, nice and simple for now. The lyrics are cool with their references to the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson. The rhythm arrangement is good too with a few change ups to make it interesting. Looking forward to the next mix - will we hear Terry's contribution?

megaupload is telling me that the file isn't available Ray....:(

The guitars are a little loud and harsh when playing together. The underlying guitar has a much more pleasnat tone. Not too bad for a mono mix. :)

ido1957,
Thanks mate. I've given this to Terry & Eric to see which is interested in doing something with it. We'll have to wait & see though Eric has a guitar line for the intro sorted already.
joeym,
I've just check it & it's fine now - sorry!
Greg L,
Yep, I knew they'd be a little that way but wasn't sure which one to lean towards. I'll tweak the levels & moderate the harshness of the overlying one - which one do you think needs the treatment? They swap places from verse to chorus. The chugging 5ths guitar plays the weirdly shaped open chords in the chorus & the guitar playing the standard open chords in the verse plays the chugging 5ths in the chorus.
Thanks for the guidance so far folks.
Cheers

OK ...finally worked.;)
Agree with Greg about the main guitar, it's very loud and overpowers everything else and a it has a high mid frequency that seem a bit straining to the ear. I'm sure you can EQ it better. Drums sound a little bit low too. Basically this could be a pretty rocking tune with a good kick to it.

Joey :)

The beefier of the two guitars is kind of overpowering. I like the effects used on both guitars, but they have a kind of grating tone. Playing this on WMP and the EQ shows a big 'ole spike around the 2k range - maybe a cut somewhere around there?

The lack of panning doesn't sem to detract too much - not sure it helps, but it doesn't seem to hurt this mix either. Cool challenge for yourself. Not sure I'd be up to it. I look forward to future incarnations of this...:)

Heat,
thanks for the detail mate. This was a quick mix as the original I'd posted was a semi tone high (I bumped the speed dial on the tape machine) & when I reset thinsg I had to remix but my ears were a little fried.
I'll def use your ideas to remix.
Joey,
Ta mate - yep - def fatigue generated by that freq. Will fix on the weekend when I remix.
Monkey - has Big China clamped down on Mega as well a Google? Do you get that sort of intervetion in the freemarket capital of SEAsia?
