I'm a little unorthodox. I've been in several studios and had what I thought were GREAT mixes, only to hear it at home on a stereo or in the car and have it sound like open ass. As a result I don't have any trust for studio monitors of any kind. Maybe one day I'll hear monitors that change my mind. I'm always keeping that option open.
Anyway, I use a BASIC home stereo system to mix down on. It's middle of the road. 5 speaker Philips desktop stereo with a low-to-mid quality subwoofer. I have this setup in a basic bedroom, similiar to any bedroom that my listener might be listening to this music in. My theory is that if I can get it to sound good using a middle-of-the-road system, it'll sound good ANYWHERE. So far, for me it's worked. I test my mix with this stereo, in the car, and in a few friends' stereos to see where to improve my mixes.
