My current PC speakers are shit, I don't want to buy something quarter assed, I'd like to get something to last a while.
I am hoping on being able to run monitors directly from my souncard.
Is this a usual application in anyone/everyone's experience for nearfield monitors?
What kind of monitors are good for an overall reliable freq. response?
How dependant upon your soundcard is the overall quality, despite having decent monitors?

Any other input is greatly appreciated....

I've been investigating this myself. I've been using a combination of my Z-560's, headphones, a boom box, a home stereo, and my car stereo to check my mixes. It's miserable.

One thing I learned in my research is that your soundcard will not support passive monitors. You either need to buy both monitors and an amp for them or powered monitors.

I don't have much of a budget, so I'm still investigating which monitors to buy.

What soundcard are you using?

Oh...and where in Illinois are you? I'm originally an Illinois boy myself, from Galesburg and I've lived in Peoria, Rock Island, and Moline.

The same as your sound depends on your preamps, mics, etc..

Here are some monitors that are cheap that MANY MANY people on this board love. I don't think I've ever read anything bad about them.

I know you're saying "$500 isn't cheap!" but in reality these are probably the lowest you should stoop to have 'good' monitors. I know other people will object and say Alesis M1s are great, and some other monitors, but I've heard bad things about any other set of monitors and nothing bad about these ones.

Mind you, I don't own any, but I will soon. Haha. Do a search.

Monitors are VERY important. Think of it as you being a painter: You have all of the top notch paints, brushes, etc, but oh no, where are your eyes? You're screwed.

I bought the Alesis M1mkII active speakers a few months back for $399 a pair. Very happy with the quality and clarity of the sound. Its got good response a both ends (low and high) and look very cool with the blue power LED.:D
