Hey guys,

Within the next 30 days I should be getting ready to move my recording setup into my office and out of my small closet, yay! :D

Currently my monitors are sitting on my desk shelves but with the move I was planning on buying some stands to have them set up better for mixing.

I have seen a few designs lately where people are building them into soffitts. For example like this:
attachment.php

(which by the way, incredible transformation on that room and I am very jealous!)

My question is why build them into the soffitts? Is it strictly for looks or is there a benefit to it for mixing? Also, how would you get behind them to adjust volumes, check wiring, etc?

I think it looks way better like the above pic than on stands, but wanted to see if there was also any other benefits of having them that way.

soffits help eliminate early reflections and bass problems. They look great, but people use them because they sound better. only the speaker is showing, so that is the only sound you get. If you plan on building soffits, do your research.

A soffet face is simply an extention of the speaker box baffle. This prevents diffraction at the edge of the speaker box and reflections off the front wall. Contrary to what Shout it out says, early reflections off the side walls
and ceiling will still occur without proper treatment. However, there is a far better reason for soffit mounting monitors. Read this.

and finally, if you want to soffit mount ported nearfields, you need this.

If you plan on using soffits i read that you need to deaden the back wall of the control room with 4'' 703, this way you are getting the direct sound with no back wall reflections and as fitz said you will need side wall and ceilign treatment. I accidentaly assumed you would have angled walls which would help with the reflection thing. Sorry.

Hey cincy,

I agree with you that Monitor Speakers don't look the best on stands, but sometimes it just has to be!!...and acoustic treatment is in order for your first reflections and trapping your bass frequencies etc with broadband absorbers, Bass Traps and clouds etc.

But here is a pic of the stands I made for my Studio Monitor Speakers....minus the acoustic treatment!!
