I am just putting together my frist studio and I'd like to know if it is a bad idea to place my monitors inside the compartments of my desk hutch. This is were the mixing computer will be and by the way... it is a corner desk too and the Walmart kind made of compressed cheap material.

The opening boxes is about 1 x 1 x1 but the top shelf can be adjusted. The monitors are a couple of RP5's and would be placed equidistant from the center of the desk.

Can I go ahead and place them there and use thick absorption panels on the walls of the compartment or forget about it.

Thanks guys

Couple of thoughts...

How close are your monitors gonna be to your monitor? You'd have to get them pretty close for this to really matter, but magnets don't really like monitors much...

How far apart are the monitors going to be if you put them in the desk? I'd try to get at least 4 or 5 feet on them, and then sit the same distance away from each of them, making an equilateral triangle with your head and the two speakers as the points.

Do you have a picture?

Just to amplify a bit on coolwhip's post, Corners are not a great place to put speakers. Bass tends to build up there and can really alter the way you perceive their play back. Also you really want the speakers on a median plane with your ears from where your seated when mixing, in a more or less equilateral triangle about 6' or so for nearfields.

It's not ideal, but if you really want to put them there, consider removing the back of the compartments, and place the monitors so that their faces are well forward of the front plane of the compartment, and on mouse pads or something like that to de-couple them. Do all that and you should be OK as far as the compartments. Then there's the bigger issue of a corner location for the mix position. If this is your only real option, get some Owens Corning 703 and read up on building bass traps. You're going to need to un-corner the corner.
