So I'm getting some monitors, until now I've been using headphones (AKG k240 studio).
I'm mainly mixing my own rap vocals and a bit of song, so that's what I need the monitors to be good for. But they should work for mixing pretty much anything.
Suggestions on what to get? Do I need the expensive ones if mixing rap is the main objective for the monitors?
my price limit is about 400 dollars / 300 euros.

A better question would have been "Do I need good ones if mixing accurately is the main objective for the monitors?"
And the answer would be yes, and your environment should be good too.

If you're literally just mixing vocals to a pre made backing track though you can get away with murder or, worse yet, headphones. :p
If that's what you're doing and you 'trust' the backing mix, don't worry too much about expensive monitoring solutions.

I think Rami recently said he'd rather mix on consumer speakers in a great environment than with super dooper pro monitors in a bad environment. (Sorry if it wasn't you, RAMI.)
I expect there'd be people lining up to agree with him so maybe that's something you could look into? (Studio building/display forum).

That's just my opinion and the pros might really take issue with it.

Thanks for the reply Steen! I'll look into the environment issue before choosing monitors!
