Monitors for general purpose listening? Plus a few other questions

Right, so my situation is this. Currently I've only got simple 2.1 computer speaker thingies, Altec Lansing ATP3 system. Two flat panel speakers and a subwoofer. Now, I'm no "hifi-ear" (except when it comes to guitar gear) and this system has worked well for my needs, from movies to music and gaming.

However, where I've noticed is that it doesn't deliver is when I play bass. I'm mainly a guitar player so I don't own a bass amp. Hell, I don't even own decent recording equipment so I'm pluggin straight into the Soundblaster X-Fi soundcard's mic input via an adapter. The problems I have is mainly clarity - whether just listening to the sound straight or going through something like NI Guitar Rig 2 demo (using it's bass amp model and patches). Lack of definition.

Now, is this mainly due to improper impedances? Meaning could I fix this with a simple DI box or something like the Line6 Toneport (which has interested me as an all-in-one recording solution for vocals, miced guitar amps and direct bass)?

Or would I be better off getting proper monitors? Notice that recording is way back on my list, merely a hobby. Of more importance to me is that the monitors will work for general purpose use - the afore-mentioned music, movies, games etc. since I don't have a lot of space and don't feel like switching between several speakers. I was considering getting a pair of Genelec 8020As since they seem to be listed on their website both on the home theater and pro sides and since they're made here in Finland they're fairly reasonably priced.

But here comes the problem - I can't afford to pair them with a subwoofer at this time, so my concern is will I be missing low end badly?

I'm not really the type who gets a huge kick out of massive bowel thumping bass but I'd hate to notice that there's none.
Thanks in advance.

As a general rule you can find fairly good fidelity (including the low end) even from a fairly small speaker system, just not do it a room filling levels. As always we're looking for that balance of accuracy, cost, and head room. So even if you don't go for the head-thumping capacity, at least the recording and input choices get easier.
Hope that helps a little anyway. :D
