monitors at $300 to recommend?

DO you have any experience with monitor in this price that you would for studio monitors ($300 range)? This is for a home studio in office that is not set up with acoustic walls or anything. Just drywall and furniture. I would like to set them up on stands at about ear height and would be within 2-3 feet of me. New or used is ok with me (Ebay).
I currently use my old home stereo speakers with are JBLs 2 way with 12" and tweeter but they are really to large to place anywere convenient and besides I hear consumer speakers are not good for monitors as they color the sound as bass etc.

Should I get active monitores bi-amped etc. Or is it ok just to use my amp to drive some decent passive ones?

Event 2020, Sampson, Beringher Truth, Alesis are some of the names that pop up on Ebay in this range and I guess are low end makers.

is there a web site that has reviews of monitors?

rkruz. a lot of folks like yorkville monitors.
yet others like the krk and wharfedales it seem on this site.
if your feeling adventurous you can also build a nice pair yourself for your budget. lots of plans are on the net. just google for "speaker building kits".
lots of sites. friends of mine have built their own in the past and some sound very very good AND accurate ! peace.

At the risk of inflaming the Wharfedale Hype police I woudl recomend the Wharfedales ot that price range.

I own a pair of Yorkvilles and it's been the one thing I haven't felt a big urge to upgrade at some point. I own the passives. I haven't used the actives.

ok. thank you for that. I guess $ are #1 criteria. I leaning toward inexpensive to get my feet wet and grow into something better as I understand more and can appreciate a better monitor. For now im thinking the Nady SM250a which is failry inexpensive for the performance and beging powered and all.
