monitors and truth

I'm setting up my home recording system (via PC) and I understand that I should not use my $79 multimedia speakers, rather, I should get decent studio monitors. In order to get more monitor for my money, can I use my stereo as a monitor amp or will that defeat the purpose of using monitors to hear the "true" sound?

Sure!

That will most likely (unless your stereo REALLY sucks) give you a better monitoring than your PC speakers...

If you have a good stereo, it will do for a start!
