My questions revolve around both of these and I am looking for suggestions. I am looking for some powered monitors between $700-$1000 for playback on a mobile recording set up - that is, I will be recording in different rooms at different times and these monitors are going to be fixed on platforms on the back of this rack on wheels. It would seem that 'nearfields' are the way to go. Hopefuul someone can sehd some light on this since I am not in the position to demo them. For what is offered, which are the flatest? Cleanest?
Now for headphones: Are there any headphones that are good enough that they can be used for same room engineering, engineering while there are people playing? What would be great reccomendations for this application? What also do you suggest for overdub headphones? Can I get away without using a headphone amp? I am interested in quality all the way, so with in reason, money is not a big factor with headphones. So, thanks! And with the help I have gotten from some of you, things are coming together quite nicely.

Yo JKESS 114: Code 3/4: Virtual code invisible:

For Ear cans: Try a pair of Beyer 250's. They will serve you well for any application.

I have six sets of phones in my studio: I use the two Beyer 250's all of the time; the talent sings through one pair and I listen through the other.

Phones are plentiful on the market and they are not expensive; the Beyer phones will run around 134 Pezzutos.

They are worth it. German engineered: good stuff. Remember the VW?

Enjoy and as for the monitors: WOW; you have a selection that is about as large as the possibilities on a nude beach.
Ears, eyes, and wallet decide.

okay but what about monitors?

Should I be looking for near fields? The advice I am looking for, I hope, would draw a line at a certain cost level between brands that have a brand name and brands that give you a little more for what they are. Cursory probing has yielded names like KRK vs. Genelec or Tannoy. Their point being that with $800 bucks to spend, I'd get better response from the KRK than the Genelecs. Of course I dont know. So maybe I could hear what you have and/or thoughts on my situation; key points being, placement that may change semi-frequently and also, close mounting of them in relationship to the recording console. Cheers!

You should certainly add Event to that list of names you are considering. The 20/20bas (bi-amplified) will run you about $650.00/pair.

If you are using a DAW and DirectX compatible software, headphones can do it all!

In the past headphones did not work for monitoring because there is no acoustic crosstalk between the channels as with stereo speakers. Now there are software algorithms like Dolby Headphone and WaveSurround which can simulate this effect giving you an almost ideal, completely portable, virtual listening-room/monitors with just headphones.

I don’t know of anything available for Dolby Headphone yet, but you can buy WaveSurround DX for $90 http://www.wavearts.com/wsdx.htm You’ll need a set of diffuse field equalized headphones like the AKG K 240 DF ($200) and maybe a headphone amp, if your sound card doesn’t have one. For as little as $300 you can have close to a world class monitoring system (only 16 bit as far as I can tell).

This is the direction I’m heading.

Per the software solution

I am not using a computer so the softare thing is not an option...any other ideas???
