I am beginning my search for a pair of studio monitors(near field as these are strictly for home studio...small home studio use). Since I am a home recorder I also will require headphones.

Do studio monitors come with input jacks for the headphones to attach(like some computer speakers), which thereby disables the monitors while listening through the headphones. If not how do the two coexist in the same environment.

BTW, the monitors will connect to an Echo Mia MIDI soundcard in an ably equipped computer set up.

Thanks.

How is the pasta in New Jersey?

If you use cans, they usually connect to your recorder or your mixing board.

Good pair of cans: Beyer 250 -- nice and clear but, do not mix using cans. Need to use your monitors to set the faders for the tracks -- PC or SIAB -- same deal.

I don't know of any speakers that have jacks for cans. Never have seen them anywhere.

I have to turn over my chop cooking in wine.

What does pasta and NJ have to do with each other???

I think he's implying there's a lot of Italians living there?

So I go to my local GC store today to price shop some near field monitors and he is trying to sell me a pair of MAudio Ultra 250s or something. They have EQ, Bass adjuster and some other bells and whistles on the backs of the monitors. A thingy where I can adjust the response based on the size of the room, etc. etc.

I don't know much about monitors(or history, or biology -apologies to Sam Cooke) but do I need to spend $100 more for that stuff? Don't I want a clean, untouched, un eq'd sound from the monitors? The sales guy at GC says it's necessary even for a small home recording guy. I disagree, but then again, I speak from ignorance.

Any knowledge on this out there.

BTW: GH, the pasta in NJ is great. I married Italian and she cooks just like mama. Molto buono.

Yes...But...if you spend $3000 on a set of monitors that all of the gurus suggest you get, and you're new to all of this, you'll be pissed because you won't be able to tell the difference (sound wise) between the $3000 pair and the $500 pair.

To start off (unless you're rolling in dough and you can afford to spend a crapload on monitors :D), do your research, find a decent midrange priced pair and start with those. A few months or a few years down the road, you'll have more experience and want to upgrade, but at that time, you'll know more of what you're looking for. Also by then, you may be so good a mixing with you're $500 monitors, that you may not want to upgrade. You never know! :D:D

I best get shopping.

Thanks for the input.

For a couple of hundred lira, you can get a pair of Yorkville monitors; they will do you fine for a long time. Just check the comments on Yorkies on this site.

You can get Yorkville on-line and they will tell you the location of the nearest dealer.

I am still using my Yorks, passive and still enjoy what they do.

Hey Salute on the fine pasta your esposa cooks for you in NJ.

Get a bottle of EDNA VALLEY PINOT NOIR and it will really go with ANYTHING.

Hey GH

Passive yorkies huh. Isn't that some kind of dog or something. Anyway.....

I presume you are also using an amp. That's the only way you can use passive monitors no??

BTW our favorite dinner wine is Santa Margarita Pinot Grigio. Likewise goes with anything. We will give Edna Valley a whirl this weekend. Thanks.

Ciao GH

Yorkvilles also have a powered version.

There may still be the passive Yorkvilles on ebay, there were yesterday, they were pretty cheap if I remember correctly...

I've pretty much decided on the powered Yorkvilles once I save enough cash...

You're right! I use a Yamaha integrated amp to run my ENTIRE rig. This amp will shoot two tape decks either way, hook up two sets of speakers and that rocks, CD, AUX, Phono, Am/FM [which I don't use.] and the amp has a "clear through" button which eliminates any coloration from the amp.

York Passives were first, and now there are the amped monitors. I've not used amped monitors yet but may be moving toward a pair.

There are not many good WHITE dry wines around. Edna Valley also does a Chard that is excellent. I like Pinot Grigio too and buy various brands.

Get your rig going and start recording some smashes....
