I saw a couple of threads recently that has inspired me to ask what the board thinks of leaving your monitors on all the time.
I keep mine in the always on setting, basically because i havent bought a switchable rackmount power block.
but anyone think this is good OR bad for the monitors (i'm usiang active wharfe 8.2s btw)

thanks

They use a lot of electricity even when they aren't running. I've got mine plugged into a power strip that's easy to reach, and I just flip that switch.

If your saying, just leave them ON=Powered Up a 100% of the time= forever?

i've always thought of heat as electronics main enemy.
so no, i wouldn't leave monitors on all the time.
your asking alot from your heat sinks to dissipate the heat that long. HSinks which are a fixed mass, so eventually something would give. one transistor leg, one capacitor, maybe that voltage regulator dioide? chips tend to get very hot...hence the little fan on your Pentium and Celeron, since ~1991-92...
if it wasn't for that little fan there wouldn't of been a Pentium.
You ever touched a computer chip after its been ON and working for awhile? they can burn the F out of your finger!

If your asking about applying the power to the Monitors (and amps)..
Off first and On last to avoid the common popping sound. Volume at zero.

If your talking about using the power strip to reduce wearing out the Monitors On/Off switch on the speakers themselves...
its a good practice for long term reduction in wearing out the switch which is mechanical. most switches can often take >100,000 of toggles though...but if you can avoid it why not? a power strip is cheaper than a monitor switch...especially for live gigs where you can change out a power strip easier than ordering a special on/off switch.
same with these new plastic guitar plugs or mic jacks...plastic man..plastic monkey stuff.

We could tie this straight over to the large format console approach as well. There are many people that swear by leaving large format consoles on 24/7. The principle here is that the capacitors are actually damaged more (wear out quicker) when subjected to constantly being powered up and powered down then they are by the constant heat. Personally, I decided to start turning my console off in the summer when I am not in there. This decision was based on two things. First, I found out after leaving it on for four months that it costs me $75 a month just in electricity to leave it on. Second, I put a thermometer on top of the knobs one day. Five minutes later the temperature had gone to 104, and that is an inch and a hlaf from the steel plating on top of plastic knobs. In the winter however, I am going to leave it on. Last winter I never had to trun on any heat in my control room. I have 3 old windows going to the outside and even when the outside temperature was blow 0, the control room stayed at a constant 70 degrees just by leaving the console on:D

With spekers I turn them off for a completely seperate reason. I am always afraid that with speakers something could happen pretty easily where some piece of equipment in the chain goes out and as a result sends some crazy signal down the chain. Whatever that signal is could possibly be something that destroys your speakers.

thanks for the comments... i think im going to get myself a switched strip or rack something real soon.... mostly for the energy wasting reason of it, the only thing in the chain in front of it is my A/D/A and thats always on too, but ill switch them both,

last week my dvd player got frizzled by an electrical storm ( i keep all my stereo stuff on 24/7 too)

xstatic, you should get some better windows and insulation.. you might be able to heat your whole house woth that console :)
