I currently use a Joe Meek VC6Q pre for vox and some acoustic recording. One convenient thing it’s got is two outputs. One goes into my 1010 and the other to my mixer aux in so I can monitor the source. In looking at different preamps I’ve noticed that some other companies like Great River offer two outputs so you can monitor directly and not by listening to the signal coming back out of your DAW.

So I’m wondering how you guys who are using pre’s with one output doing your monitoring? Are you using a splitter? Are you just dealing with the latency coming back out of your DAW?

Hi,
Most soundcard mixer apps have provisions for hardware monitoring. It's a software splitter kind of thing. ;)

My setup is getting to where I'll probably want to go at least partially to a patch bay for preamp monitoring. I've been using pres with dual outs' (Precision 8) and the insert-as out's on some RNP's (cable mod there).. but doing a split on the line out (one way or the other) is the hardware way to do it.

A couple of my pres have a second output for monitoring, but I don't use it. I prefer to monitor after the converters so that I'm hearing what's on it's way to disk, not what's on it's way to the A/D. For that reason, I would rather use the Lynx mixer in my case for input monitoring. Same goes with my other interface, Delta 66.
