Ok, so I am looking at monitors. I would like a decent pair, but I don't really have a whole lot of money to spend. Recommendations are greatly appreciated. I would like active ones though.

As for the headphones, I am looking to get 2 pair for people to listen to while they play, and then I would like a pair for use in mixing.

Please give suggestions if you can in various price ranges. Thanks so much to everyone that has helped me here so far and thanks in advance to everyone that helps me on this matter!

 Yo ForeverDownTown: :D

Uhh, you don't want to use cans for mixing. What you might hear in the cans won't be what you hear after the mix.

I use the KRK ST8s passive. Very nice quality at a price below 200 pezzutos.

If you want actives, you'll have to check as I don't use actives. Lots of actives out there but the pezzuto count is higher.

When you look at cans, there are many good ones out there. Personally, I like the Beyer 250s; I think the model number has changed slightly to: 250-80 but they are the same as mine. Nice fit, good sound, comfortable on the lobes.

Check around, read, and, if you can, go to a vendor and listen to the monitors before you buy them.

Or, make sure you have a return policy from the vendor before you spend the pezzutos.

Yea, I will use the monitors for primary mix, and then the headphones to get a second opinion as well as to use for tracking etc...

:D Yea, verily Down of Goose:

Your "cans" will be no real check on your mix. Cans for tracking, yea, verily and may Cleopatra sing for you.

When you do your CD or tape, your monitors will give you a good photo of your work. Hi/Fi speakers color the sound and may make it sound better.

But, have fun and spin those dials.

well can I get some headphone recommendations anyway? like best bang for buck? thanks!

Do a search on MORE ME Headphones . They are only $20 buck a pair and they get the job done for tracking. If nothing else, you can't beat the warranty that Harvey is offering on these headphones. Definantly a candidate for "best bang for your buck".

For cheap active monitors it's hard to go wrong with M-Audio. You can get a pair of the BX-5 monitors for $299, or if you luck out you can get a "scratch and dent" pair from musiciansfriend.com for maybe $240 or so. I think they're better than the Behringer Truths.

hmm, because I was reading some reviews that ranked the behringer truths quite high.

best/cheapest coolest headphones for mixing: grado hr80s.

made in brooklyn! $80 or so. read the reviews... them well liked.

for tracking... get the more mes. harvey is a nice guy, he runs his business to be very CONSUMER oriented. liberal return policy. good warranty. stuff like that. he as even sent off order BEFORE people pay.

One word. Event! Of all the monitors I've tried Event has given me the best sound.

thanks, I actually pretty much had decided on the moreme's before you posted. I had remembered reading about them here so I dug the link up and decided on those since no one had given any input. Thanks a lot though and I will def look into the other ones mentioned.

As far as monitors I think I am going to go with the Behringer Truths or the M-Audio Studiophile BX5's. And if I have the extra 100 bucks to shell out at the time of purchase, or if I can find a deal somewhere I will go for teh EVENT TR-6 Tuner References.

Thanks Everyone!!

As the others said, for mixing, forget it. If you want headphones for tracking, the MoreMe's are very good, and very cheap. All the info is at:
http://moreme.info

If you must use headphones for mixing, any of the higher dollar Sony, Sennheiser, AKG, Beyers, and Grados will work fine, but they won't translate well to speakers withour a lot of getting use to them.

I use the Radio Shack Optimus Nova 67's for listening to mixes from time to time. They're open back, cheap, and amazingly unhyped. No good for tracking, but they'll work just fine for listening.

You can get the Event TR-6 pair for about the same price as the Behringer Truth pair at www.bpmmusic.com . They also have the TR-5 pair for about $250 USD and the TR-8 pair for about $400 USD. They are a dirt cheap website and they ship free for anything over $50. They don't have everything but they have a lot for a lot less than most other places. Check it out.

thanks for the link seta! and harvey, I am prob going to be using a pair of 100 dollar sony headphones. I forget the model number, but they are sony studio headphones... I Want to say md500 or 750 or something like that.

Good choice. The Sony 7506 is the model you want.

i have used both the sonys and the grados.

for mixing purposes the grados are much MUCH better. of course, you are looking at an open can configuration, which makes them less useful for tracking. but the sonys are hyped all over in a sort of strange way.

the grados are a bit "prettified" like a high dollar hi-fi system, but they dont have the strange frequency response that the sonys have.

again, read the reviews on the grados. plus, if you get the grados you are gonna have a MUCH better pair of headphones for casual listening.
