I'm looking for a pair of monitor stands that stand between 36" and 48" tall and will hold my Studiophile SP-8B speakers. I've looked many different places, and have yet to find the right thing. Sweetwater has a pair that look like the right size, but they're Raxxes stuff, which means that they're ridiculously overpriced - they want $130 for a pair of particle-board stands. Does anybody have any leads on a less expensive pair of stands, or suggestions about where to look?

Thanks,

Chris

It's my understanding that the most important factor in monitor stands is that they be rock solid, i.e. vibration free. If a stand vibrates with the speaker it changes the the quantity and quality of the sound being projected in the "intended" direction.

There are stands that are excellent, but you pay for them. So I'm wondering, wouldn't it just work to build columns of cinderblocks or some other very heavy solid material?

Chris,

There have been a couple of threads about DIY stands...........from memory they may have been in the Studio Building forum some time back.

One idea that was used was a length of approx., 4" diameter PVC drainage pipe, a couple of matching PVC flanges and a particle board base and top. The pipe was cut to the required length, a flange fitted flush on each end with the base plate screwed to one flange.........the whole thing was then filled with sand and the top plate then attached to the top flange. A coat of paint and they look great.

Kangarock,

Thanks, and DOUBLE THANKS! Not only did I see how the stands were put together, but I also found exact instructions for the exact kind of absorber panels I want to build. I was told to use "rockwool" instead of fiberglass, but other than that, it's exactly the same thing. Thanks again for the link.

Glad to help...........when you have it all done, you should get pics to LongSoughtFor to post on his site.

Just finished them yesterday, and they look GREAT. Painting them was a bit difficult at first because apparently PVC conducts a great deal of static electricity. But once I got the first couple of coats on, everything went smoothly. Now I've got a pair of great 40" stands that put the speakers right at the correct height. Total cost, about $50. Thanks for the blueprint, Aus!
