Im just starting out with a homestudio, I need to find out how to set up my monitors correctly for recording and playback. Im using a Mackie VLZ Pro 1604 board, Aardvark 20/20+ 8 in 8 out interface and a Alesis 100 watt power Amp to 2 Monitor One speakers. I was just using my computers stock soundcard, so I could control the monitors from the line out. Now that I have this new setup, I need to be able to listen to audio going in and then listen to it for playback. I was going to put the 8 channels out of the Mackie into the Aardvark and then 8 channels back into the Mackie from the Aardvark, then from the Mackie main out to the monitors (that should take care of recording monitors). Do I need to run my Aardvark card (recording) and my computers original card (playback) for seperate activitys? Or will the Aardvark sound card set up to run both recording and playback (mix) monitoring? Im still waiting on the Aardvark card and Im trying to run the correct set up through my head. Any help?
Thanks, James

hi james,

if i understood correctly, you'll be taking the direct outs of tracks 1-8 to the aardvark ins for recording, right? (be sure to disengage the output assign buttons of these tracks on the mackie). you can then route all your multitrackers outputs to a stereo pair on the aardvark and put them in a stereo pair on the mackie, which you'll send to your monitors via the main or assignable outs. then you should be hearing what you're recording as you're recording it, and it'll be the same for playback.

will that work for you?
