This may be a stupid question, but please excuse my ignorance (new to home recording). I own a Carvin AG100D 100w acoustic guitar, bass and PA amp. http://www.carvin.com/products/single.php?ItemNumber=AG100D&CID=GA. I have no experience with studio monitors and before I buy a pair (thinking of the M-Audio BX8s), I'm wondering that if I were to buy the matching extension cab to my Carvin AG100D, would the Carvin set-up be suitable as studio monitors? If so, how would they compare to reasonable quality studio monitors? I understand why studio monitors are the preferred option over stereo speakers (for the clean, uncolored sound), but can PA speakers (in the case of my amp with PS12 woofer and horn tweeter) be a viable alternative, at least in the short-term until I can afford the BX8s?

Thanks in advance.

when we talk about "monitors", there are actually two different things we are talking about, and both of them end up being described the same.

Stage Monitors, allow us to hear a mix on stage of what is being sent to the main pa speakers. These speakers are called monitors. Your carvin system could function at this task.

The second thing, STUDIO monitors, are quite different. These are extremely closely designed speakers, to produce a sound only within a certain distance of the speaker, and to do so with out "influencing" the sound. The nearfield studio monitors are designed with a very flat frequency response curve. These are speakers dedicated to one specific task, and really cant be substitued with other types of speakers.

hope that cleared something up for you
