Not sure why the pop,but it could definatly damage your monitors.

I finally got some nearfield monitors (Yorkville YSM-1's) and a cheap amp to power them (Electar 200 from Musicyo, until I can afford that Hafler). When I turn the amp off I get a fairly loud pop on the monitors, even when I turn the volume knobs on the amp down and turn everything else off (mixer, rack gear, etc. I've noticed that the load protection light comes on when this happens (even though the amp is now off).
Why am I getting this pop? Could this damage the speakers?

As always thanks in advance for your help!

I'm thinking of an integrated amp which contains one or more preamps and power amp...sorry.

Consider making or purchasing a speaker switchbox (A/B box). It'd work.

There might be some fancy circuit to get rid of the pop, but I like to look for the simpler solutions...especially considering that you plan on eventually getting a better amp.

A switch box is a good idea, I didn't know they made such a thing. I need a midi cable anyway, so I'll head over to the RS after work.

Thanks SM2K!

Are you looking for a bonehead solution? If so, plug headphones into the amp before turning it off (or on). This should interrput the signal to the power amp hence your headphones will get a small pop, and your monitors will not be affected.

I do this with my amp....which doesn't have a bad pop...but that typical surge you get with many older amps.

Thanks for the solution, but I don't have a headphone jack on the amp...

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you. I've never seen a power amp with a headphone jack.

How much of a pop are we talking about here Reqs? I get the odd pop, but usually more of a click when turning off my poweramp. Depends how I quickly I click the switch (probably a bad design on mine).

If you can see your speaker cones move or something when it pop's then it might be a bad scene, otherwise, I wouldn't be too concerned. But how loud? The load protection light also comes on on mine when powered down, but it's supposed to do this.

I payed more attention to it last night. Its hard to quantify. Its not a real loud pop, its more of a click. I'll have a look at the speakers tonight.

I went out and bought a switch at RS, but I can tell the connectors are poor quality, and I don't want to stick this weak link in the chain if I don't have to.

Thanks for the advice, I'll look when I get home.
