Now which is the worst case scenario:

A. Speakers are at a different distance from side walls compared to front wall, but when im at the mixing position im in the center of the room (lengthwise).

B. Speakers are same distance from side walls and front wall but mixing position isn't dead center middle of the room.

Just another quick Qs:

1. How far off from center planes do I have have to be ?
Cause my speakers are also dead center in middle of room height wise.. is a few inches good enough ? height of my room is 90" and the center of speakers and my ears are at 45"..
How far should i minimally try to move them ?

2. Same goes for mixing position .. how far off center plane do i have to be length wise ?? room is 11 X 14 .. speakers are against the 11' wall.

Ok I'll take a stab at it.
I won't say which is worst case, because they both suck....D)

It really depends on what type/make speakers, but it sound like you have them really close to the corners? I assume they are free standing yes?
They could be closer to the front wall then the sides. They should be the same distance from side wall on either side, ultimately they should be @ 4-5 feet from each other, and at least 2-3 ' from side walls. Try to get them at least 1' from front wall. That way the equalateral triangle would put you about 6' from the front wall. That way you won't be in the middle of the room.

As far as height goes, I would guess to say move them up or down at least 9".

Any guru's correct me if I'm out thereD)

cool thanks tony.. this placement business is a pain.. i'll have to alter my desk in some way to make it higher..

Any idea if bass traps would be more important in the front wall or the back wall ??

I don't know if you're familiar with room modes and basic room acoustics. If not, search on that, it's the basics.

If you do know room modes, you'd know the fundamental mode will be at it's best when sitting dead center (lengthwise, you ALWAYS have to sit dead center, width-wise for your stereo-image!!). Try a frequency sweep 10-1000Hz when sitting in different locations or a fixed sine at different frequencies, especially those below 200Hz.

About basstraps: most used design is LEDE: Live End - Dead End.
The idea is you want a dead front end of the room and live end behind you (with indeed the length being longer than the width).
First/early reflections are impossible to distinguish from the orignal signal for your brain, so you want to get rid of those.
In other words: put the bass traps in the front wall ;)

In your 11x14 room try using the 11-wall as width with your desk + speakers in the middle (width-wise), a few feet off the front wall.

But then again, it depends on your speakers, wall/floor/ceiling material, furniture, materials in the room, etc....

good luck!
