I saw advertised a set of monitor isolation pads, which are supposed to eliminate resonances in whatever they happen to be sitting on, thereby lessening coloration. Is this a gimmick or a lgitimitely useful product? Can some block foam, or neoprene or something serve the same purpose? Thanks.

Yep.

You want to use a material that will dampen or isolate vibrations going from the monitor to the stand/desk.

Tex is right, any foam or neoprene works fine. In a real pinch, thick placemats even work.

The key is to isolate the vibrations of the monitors cabinet and whatever it is sitting on; stand, shelf, pole, cables.
