Monitor humming....only one

M-Audio BX8's. I've had them sitting here for a couple of weeks. I just had to wait to get the right cables to hook them to my Delta 1010. I have a problem with the Delta but that's in another thread. :rolleyes:

The monitor to my left hums and the hum gets louder as the volume is increased....any idea why?
 
If you swap cables, does the hum follow the cables, or stay with that monitor?
 
I swapped the cables. It's still there...not as loud as I remember but it's still there.

I put the other cable on my other monitor and there's still no hum from it.
 
If they're active monitors try switching the outlet. Also power up just your monitors (amp) nothing else to see if its in the amp or the signal chain.
 
When I unplugged just the TRS cable, and turned on the speaker, there was NO hum at all.

It also seemed like the hum got quieter when I plugged it back in to see if it was still there.

The other speaker does not do this at all.
 
Sorry, I wasn't being clear. Assuming the left speaker is humming:

Without disconnecting the cables from the Delta 1010, just swap the cables at the speaker ends. If the hum stays on the left speaker, it's a problem with the left speaker. If the hum switches to the right speaker, it's the Delta 1010, the cable, or wire routing.
 
I swapped the cables earlier and the hum wasn't as loud.

Could it be the power outlet?

Also, I've heard of there being hum in monitors before and then one day it just goes away?

I know it's for sure not as loud as it was when I first turned them on...
 
Harvey is on the right track with his substitution switching method of troubleshooting. I'd keep going on that track; switching devices around in and out of the signal chain to see if you can find a weak link.

There is also a chance that you may be suffering EM interference from outside you signal chain. Do you have any thing like a flourescent light fixture, a neon sign, or any major transformers anywhere near your left cable or speaker or plugged into the same electrical circuit as your audio gear? If so, these could be giving you a bummer of a hummer.

My monitor hums when it doesn't know the words.
 
No, they are on different outlets.

I'll keep messing around with it...but I don't think it's the speaker. They are brand new. Of course, it is possible...
 
Is the powercord of the monitor that hums in the same outlet as a computer screen (monitor). I had this problem and when I removed the screen power cord the problem went away.

Yeah, I'll give you $10 to your doughnut that it's not the speaker sitelf (unless it's a powered speaker.) The problem is either a grounding problem somewhere along the signal chain (usually, but not always in the cables or jacks for the cables) or you are getting outside interference from a transformer, bad light fixture, TV or monitor (including ginzburg's idea.)

That's my bet, anyway...
