What's a guy to do? I've got 1 little line out....and I don't want to get into an expensive headphone mixer/ amp.

I called Guitar Center to ask Pro audio what they've got and the dork told me the first thing I need to do is upgrade my sound card. Well I eventually will, but for now I need a decent quick fix. SB lIve seems to be doing fine with Cool Edit Pro.

The headphones are so quiet when I plug them directly in to the line out, even with the volume cranked, and I picked up a Y splitter so I can have my headphones and monitors plugged in at once, but that's twice as bad on the volume factor.

Anyone had a similar problem?

BTW my monitors don't have a headphone jack.

Hey, Rats.

I assume you've got an amp for your monitors (or powered monitors) and so that part isn't a problem. Is that correct?

For the headphones, I use a cheap pair of Yamaha computer speakers that have a headphone jack on them. Normally I use them with headphones, but they also a good way just to check what the sound is like on cheaper speakers :)

So, if you Y to the computer speakers and to the monitor amp, does that work? It worked for me, but I'm not doing that anymore (now I got to a mixer (I've got 6 line outs now), then use the multiple outs of the mixer to handle the job the Y used to do....)

Bear with me, my "monitors" are computer speakers. They're not too terrible by my standards, but they don't have a headphone jack. It just sucks the way the Y cuts the power so much, or I'd just use that for now with the headphones in one end.

Is there a cheap mixer out there that will do the job? I'm talking no more than 20-30 bucks?

Well, the Yamaha speakers I was using actually sound pretty good (for cheapass speakers) and they do have a headphone jack. I think the last time I saw them they were like $70 (canadian)... so that would be in your range... I think that's probably your best bet - go down to Future Shop and take a listen to their computer speakers and buy a new set with headphone jacks.

Your other option is to suffer for a while until you get up the cash to upgrade everything. Unless anyone else has any better ideas?

I do remember seeing this tiny little piece of shit headphone amplifier at radio shack for around $20$...I wonder if I could plug my speakers into that...I don't see why not!?

I don't see why not either. Give it a go - see what happens. Keep the receipt :)
